Wood has soul. Its beauty is the work of nature. Each ring of a tree's trunk displays a year's struggle and growth in the life of a living organism. The variety of species and the uniqueness of each tree represents an infinite supply of natural shapes and forms. My use of wood as a material results from a fascination with its unique inherent beauty. I like to display that beauty in the pieces that I build. It enriches our lives to be surrounded by the honest and quiet presence of objects crafted from nature's own materials. Wood also happens to be a very versatile and functional material. Despite the invention of plastics and the creation and refinement of other building materials, it remains popular because it has properties that are hard to reproduce. In addition, with our cooperation, it has the unique ability to renew itself. It is not without its problems, some of which are described in the next sections. But nothing else is as diverse in its utility or as richly abundant as the product of earth's forests. Back to the Top© Copyright 2002 |
